Anchored in Today, Not Tomorrow
Now that we’re more than a few days into the new year, the excitement of New Year’s resolutions is starting to meet reality. I love dreaming up goals, but when it comes to taking the daily steps necessary to achieve them, sometimes I fall short.
What I’ve learned is that many goals leave room for circumstances outside of my control. We don’t always know how a business will grow, or how an estranged family member or friend will respond when we reach out. We may hope for a banner year in business or a fully restored relationship, but the outcome isn’t always ours to decide.
But here’s the truth: what I can control is what I commit to today.
I can control how I start my day, what I eat, whether I exercise, how I spend money, and what I let enter my day and my mind. Making the mental shift from setting goals to making commitments places me squarely in the accountability seat—and it changes everything.
Committing Today: Planting Seeds for Tomorrow
Commitment isn’t about instant results; it’s about repetition.
Lifting a weight one time doesn’t build strength or definition. It’s the daily reps, the consistent effort over time, that produces visible change. The same is true in every area of life. One prayer won’t deepen your faith. One healthy meal won’t transform your body. One hard conversation won’t heal a relationship. But showing up again and again will.
Every choice, every action, every small step you take today is like planting seeds in a garden. You may not see the harvest right away, and some things will always remain outside of your control, but if you keep showing up and doing the work within your reach, God will take care of the growth and the timing.
This is where discipline becomes the key. Motivation will fade, it always does, but discipline determines your outcome. Everything stems from consistency and daily obedience, even when you don’t feel like it. Discipline is what keeps you anchored when circumstances aren’t perfect and results aren’t immediate.
When we anchor ourselves in today, we stop worrying about outcomes we can’t control and start taking responsibility for the actions we can. We trust God to work through our obedience and bring fruit in His perfect timing.
What Are You Committing To?
Instead of vague resolutions, consider intentional commitments:
• Commit to your faith walk — daily time with God, even if it’s brief
• Commit to your marriage — choosing patience, prayer, and presence
• Commit to your kids — being emotionally available and engaged
• Commit to your health — honoring your body with movement and nourishment
• Commit to your growth — learning, healing, and becoming better
• Commit to what you know is good for your mind, body, and spirit
• Commit to owning your attitude and thoughts — choosing truth over fear
These are daily reps. small, faithful, repeated acts that compound over time.
5 Steps to Making Commitments That Last
1. Start small and specific.
Commit to actions you can control daily: reading for 15 minutes, drinking enough water, praying each morning. Big results begin with small, repeated steps.
2. Write it down.
A commitment becomes real when it’s visible. Put it in a planner, phone note, or journal so you can track your consistency.
3. Anchor it to your values.
Ask yourself: Does this align with who God is calling me to be? When your actions match your values, follow-through becomes easier.
4. Build accountability.
Share your commitments with a trusted friend, mentor, or community. Accountability strengthens discipline when motivation fades.
5. Pray, trust, and stay disciplined.
Commitments aren’t about perfection; they’re about persistence. Seek God daily, plant the seeds of obedience, and let discipline carry you forward.
God never asked us to control tomorrow—only to be faithful today.
Jesus reminds us:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34
When we commit our ways to the Lord, we acknowledge that He is sovereign over outcomes, while we remain responsible for obedience. It’s a daily decision to place our steps in His hands and trust Him with the results.
This year, instead of chasing resolutions, anchor yourself in daily commitments. Plant your seeds faithfully. Show up consistently. Do what you can today and release tomorrow to God.
When you live this way, you’ll find yourself anchored in purpose—and the growth you experience, both seen and unseen, will become a testimony of God’s faithfulness. 🤍
